What is the Historical Foundation for Southeast New Mexico?

The Historical Foundation for Southeast New Mexico was incorporated in 1978 originally as the Chaves County Historical Foundation. From the beginning its sole purpose has been to receive and administer property and funds to make distributions for the preservation of the Historical Center for Southeast New Mexico, which is owned and operated by the Historical Society for Southeast New Mexico.

What does the Foundation do?

  • Identifies and cultivates donors

  • Acknowledges all gifts to the Foundation in an annual report

  • Supports the museum in cultivating membership

  • Generates publicity to benefit the Foundation, Museum, and Archives

  • Promotes planned giving

  • Financially supports major repairs to the Museum and Archives

  • Manages bequests, memorials, and donor gifts

Our Primary Goal

The primary goal of the Foundation is to financially assist the Museum in preserving the history of Southeast New Mexico, in testifying of the everyday lives of the pioneering people who developed Southeast New Mexico, in educating all ages, especially children, and in collecting archives for historical research.

The Foundation’s Financial History

  • In 1978 the Historical Society was left $100,000, the Foundation was incorporated and a Board of Trustees was elected by the Society Board to hold and invest gifts, monetary or otherwise. AG Edwards was then appointed to advise the Foundation in choosing sound securities.

  • In 1982, with a Fundraising Campaign the Foundation together with the Society raised $154,232 towards financing the construction of a new building north of the Museum to properly store the growing archives and collections.

  • In 1989, the Foundation purchased the three lots north of the Museum for $180,000.

  • In 1990, the Foundation was deeded the property at 205 N. Missouri, 207 and 207 1/2 N. Missouri by Mr. Max Littell and Mr. Durwood Jones.

  • In 1994, the Foundation bought Lot 12 Block 19 for $6,000 from the Mary Elizabeth Hanagan Estate.

  • In 1999, the Foundation investments and assets totaled $564,300.

  • When the new Archive Building was begun in 2001 the Foundation appropriated approximately $150,000 to the construction of the building.

Our museum and historical center is located at 200 N. Lea Ave., Roswell, New Mexico 88201. It is a beautiful prairie style house built in 1912, which gives a glimpse of a simpler time when life seemed to move at a much slower pace. The first floor is furnished and decorated as it would have been in 1912 to 1920. Many of the furnishings are the originals. Several rooms on the 2nd floor have been converted into displays and exhibits of early Roswell and the surrounding area.

The archives are located in a new two story building next door. The archives contain over 11,000 photographs of the past, thousands of books and manuscripts, obituaries, newspaper articles dating back to the early 1900's and other memorabilia that depict the wild west days of the Pecos Valley. Ask us for photographs or information about Southeast New Mexico, Roswell, NM, Pecos Valley, and Chaves County.
